Cambreur college

In Dongen, the Cambreur secondary school has a new, more spacious building on the site of the existing school. The new building is compact and has a logical layout focused on unity, but with recognisable separate areas for the various departments. The building is divided into three volumes: the education wings, sports department and a 'connecting volume' with the entrance, auditorium, canteen and lecture hall.

optimal choices

The striking facade requires minimal to no maintenance and will actually become more beautiful over time. The tiles and furniture from the old square have been reused for the new square. With an enclosed garden between the education wings and panoramic windows at the end of the corridors, there is always contact with the surrounding greenery and the building is optimised for daylight.

smart use of space

The spaces of the new Cambreur College are used cleverly. Classrooms next to the learning squares can be drawn into the learning area with wide '180-degree doors'. The sloping floor in the auditorium largely consists of wide stairs to sit on, but also takes you to the first floor. Here you will also find a lecture hall, which can be used by both students and externals - a staircase at the entrance provides direct access.

sustainable

Various sustainable aspects were applied in the new building. There are PV panels on all new roofs, which enabled the Cambreur college to be nearly gas-free. As a result, it receives the 'Fresh School Class B' label, and meets the standards for Nearly Energy Neutral Buildings (BENG).

Furthermore, the main support structure, which is optimally prefabricated and flexible in its layout, the highly insulating façade and the LED lighting ensure that the new building is sustainable. A water pump also makes cooling and heating energy efficient.

gymnasiums

Two existing gymnasiums were preserved and extended towards the road. In this way, the structure encloses the square, which increases intimacy and keeps out noise for the neighbors. The gymnasiums can also be used outside school, for instance by the local fanfare band.

phased construction process

To locate the new building on the best site, six classrooms of the existing school were demolished before construction started: it was a block of two classrooms on three floors. One of the existing gymnasiums was temporarily used as an auditorium. The use of prefabricated elements reduced inconvenience during construction, allowing lessons to continue as usual in the existing, old building.

The middle volume was realised last - because it was placed close to the old building, this was carried out during the summer holidays. The steel columns in, for example, the auditorium reduce the spans and limit the thickness of the floors.
