amsterdam mayor opens circular and energy-neutral archive depot

Nieuws 2019 11 14 stadsarchief a

Yesterday, the new Depot Amsterdam Noord was officially opened by the mayor of Amsterdam, Femke Halsema. The new repository for the city’s archive, designed by cepezed and cepezedinterior, almost doubles the existing archive facilities and is completely energy neutral. Moreover, it has a flexible design that renders the building circular and removable: it is easy to use it differently, give it another function or to use it as a material donor for other buildings in the future.

facts & figures

2665m² gross floor area
45 kilometers of shelf space
municipal archives from 1811
specially air-conditioned for paper types from after 1850
1,600m² of solar panels; 290 on the façade and 800 on the roof
EPC = 0 (energy surplus)
150m³ of water retention
de- and remountable prefab parts

ceremony
More than 100 invitees toasted to the cutting-edge depot building during the ceremony. Director of the Amsterdam City Archives Bert de Vries and head of archive & collection management Emmy Ferbeek introduced the building. Mayor Halsema then performed the official opening act. Subsequently, an extensive tour took place.

depot portfolio

With Depot Amsterdam Noord, cepezed is adding a new project to its portfolio of special storage locations. Earlier, we designed the Eye Collection Center Amsterdam, the Regional Archive Tilburg and the Regional Historic Center Rijnstreek and Lopikerwaard. In addition, the CollectionCenter Netherlands is currently under construction in Amersfoort. This will accommodate the collection of the Rijksmuseum, the Dutch Open Air Museum, Paleis het Loo and the Rijksdienst voor het Cultureel Erfgoed (Cultural Heritage Agency).
