Textielmuseum Tilburg

The Textile Museum in Tilburg wished to attract more visitors and also to develop further as knowledge and expertise institute in the field of textiles. cepezed was commissioned to draw up a plan for expansion and renovation.

Lasting character

As starting point for the renovation, we took the power of the original and the retention of all distinctive and characteristic elements. The interventions were mainly focused on the building physics, good logistics and the introduction of a number of facilities. We also incorporated some new functions in the old damask weaving mill, including a foyer and museum shop.

Conscious style departure

The expansion had to lend the museum a more recognizable appearance. To achieve this, cepezed did not opt for an addition in the style of the existing building.

Instead, we explicitly designed a modern construction that contrasts sharply with the original properties. The abstract, almost scale-free glass building stands at the head of the complex. The striking steel construction has been left completely visible.

Treasure chest for the archive

Behind the weaving mill, cepezed also realized a depository for the Regional Archive, with which the Textile Museum has merged. This building component also has an abstract appearance: it is a completely closed volume that stands like a ‘treasure chest on steel portals’ above a historic exhibition building.
