police departments in one building

The building will house a number of different police departments that are currently scattered over several locations. One of these departments is the current headquarters of the police force in The Hague, located on the Burgemeester Patijnlaan.

The new-build focuses strongly on interdisciplinary cooperation. In the design proposal, the complex programme is roughly divided into three stacked building sections: a plinth with an open character and ground-based functions, a middle section with parking spaces and laboratories and an upper section with all the meeting, office and collaborative functions.

fitting in with de Binckhorst

The design dovetails closely with the existing urban character. It also responds to the trend of living, working and recreation in an industrial atmosphere. The building will be omni-directional, have a high degree of transparency and explicitly aim to connect with existing building heights, street profiles and sight lines.

The building will have a spacious roof gardens facing south, which are directly connected to the restaurant and the collaboration area. From the gardens, you look out over the rest of the Binckhorst and the skyline of The Hague.

flexible layout headquarters

In the proposal for the police station, the lower floors are intersected by a ‘canyon’. This serves an important function in access, routing, orientation and daylight penetration. At a later stage, the parking levels could be converted into office floors.

The high rise consists of a flexible structure with five bays. In between, there are atriums and patios which, like the ‘canyon’, let in plenty of daylight, and these function as meeting places. Part of the upper floors is intended for consultation between different types of expertise and between the police and chain partners. The meeting centre and restaurant can also be found here.
