Pas Reform Hatching Technologies in Doetinchem is an international player in the field of hatchery technology for the poultry sector. The company realized an almost 8,500 m² new-build, designed by cepezed, in two phases. During this process, further expansion in a third phase was factored in.

High-quality appearance 

The construction of phase one is intended purely for Pas Reform’s transfer and distribution. This is why an exceptionally simple and efficient design was chosen, where an unusually high-quality appearance has been achieved within a modest budget.

The façades consist mainly of insulated interior boxes with an exterior finish of black coated sheet piling. At the corners, the sheeting has been mitred and the seams have been sealed shut, which creates a very refined impression. The non-expanded poured concrete floor contains water piping that is connected to a geothermal heat pump system.

Smart use of space and material 

In essence, the building component consists of a single large sober volume.

Within this construction, there is another two-storey volume circa six metres square in the south-east corner. On the ground floor there is an office space, with a canteen on the first floor. The toilets, changing rooms and showers are also situated in this inner volume. All the building services are integrated in the extremely thin roof and floor package.

Construction of Pas Reform main volume 

The main volume has a refined steel construction where the column grid is based on the dimensions of standard pallet racks.

The hall is organized with a minimum number of columns, which are also very slender. The foremost 25 metres are entirely column-free to allow lorries to manoeuvre better. The overhead doors and dock shelters are clad with the same profiled sheeting as the façades and align perfectly when closed, to create an uninterrupted frontage.

Expansion to phase two 

Phase one was the winner of the 2012 BNA Building of the Year competition in the East region. The jury report said: ‘Pure, slender, elegant, controlled – the jury is deeply impressed by the craftsmanship manifested by this building.’

Phase two dovetails seamlessly, filling the plot in a southerly direction, and also has racks for storage and transfer. Just like phase one, this building block also contains an inner volume. This includes a training room and demonstration area.
