The neighbourhood Papendorp, in Utrecht, is one of the sites for a huge parkinghub and transfer to public transport. in the near future, the City of Utrecht wants to build several hubs on the outskirts of the city. In Papendorp, the mobility hub is located between the offices and the (future) residential area near the canal. Because the huge hub will obstruct the view of the future residents of that district, cepezed shaped the façade as a wooden pergola at this side.

remote parking

The mobility hub in Papendorp is a public transport stop, parking garage, sound barrier and it provides space for shops. The garage is intended for residents of the two planned residential neighbourhoods Groenewoud and Groenewoud-Noord, but also for other planned Utrecht neighbourhoods such as Beurskwartier and the Merwedekanaal zone. People working in Papendorp or travelling on to the city centre can also use it.

The hub is calculated for 2,000 car parking spaces and 1,700 bicycle parking spaces. The roof is also used for parking spaces, but can be converted into a green roof, should fewer parking spaces be needed. There are PV panels on the canopy on the roof, above the ramps.

smart construction system

The parking building is about 30 metres high and 250 metres long. We break up the very long seven-storey façade on one side by locating ramps in the middle and shaping the facade differently here. On the other side, a stepped, modular wooden frame provides variation. The frame will act as a walking route for pedestrians to and from the parking decks. Partly because of the planting on and around it, it will eventually resemble a pergola.

Besides a walking route, the pergola functions as a public zone - the difference in materials points this out. The future residents of Groenewoud will be involved to com up with ideas on the precise design and use of the pergola.
