KWR Watercycle Research Institute is a renowned institute in the field of water and water cycles. KWR works for national and international drinking-water companies, regional water boards, governments and the industry. cepezed designed a new office on the Groningenhaven in Nieuwegein. The building fits in perfectly with the surrounding green landscape.

Above ground level

The building is largely made of glass and has been lifted more than a metre from ground level. It thus forms an open, light and transparent pavilion on a plateau and gives the users an optimal connection to the green surroundings. The wide canopy on top provides effective protection from the sun.

Greenery and water

The KWR pavilion in Nieuwegein has a vegetation roof that seems to run into the central stepped atrium via the roof terrace. As if nature literally continues in the building! Of course, we also made the building sustainable in many different areas. In keeping with KWR, some of the sustainability measures are aimed at achieving optimal water management.

Open structure

The building structure consists mainly of two generic bays 12 metres deep. These do not have any supporting walls, can therefore be organized freely and have a gross storey height of four metres. This arrangement allows for every conceivable combination of laboratories, offices and shared functions such as meeting spots, quiet rooms and brainstorming spaces. Passages and footbridges connect the two bays.

Heart of KWR Nieuwegein

In between the bays, a stepped atrium represents the beating heart of the building. Here people can work and confer, but also drink coffee and eat in the restaurant. Conferences or other meetings also take place here.
