Royal Airforce

Leeuwarden Airbase is one of the two F-16 Main Operating Bases (MOBs) of the Royal Netherlands Air Force and also home to the F-35 Lightning II fighter aircraft: the fighter jets originating from the Joint Strike Fighter (JSF) programme. cepezed is designing the new Integral Logistics Centre (ILC) for the base, which is realized within a Design & Build assignment by BAM Bouw and Techniek-Regio Noord.

design task

The Integral Logistics Centre serves an efficient logistics process for the storage, management, mobilization and distribution of Air Force equipment; both at the base itself and in support of missions. The programme includes a taller building section with a warehouse and distribution hall, and a lower part that includes specific storage functions, counter and issuing functions, offices and meeting rooms. This part also contains accommodation for the squadron responsible for logistics.

Additionally, under a large canopy on the site, specific goods and army vehicles can be stored dry and under cover. Including the canopy, the building has a floor area of 4,475 m². The surrounding terrain measures approximately 22,000m², is divided into a landside and an airside and was designed by Hosper in an integral connection with the building.

pleasant and functional

The ILC has an unambiguous set-up and is aimed at providing both strong functionality and a pleasant and comfortable working environment. The circulation routings are clear and well-organized, the walking routes short and efficient. The centre has a high degree of transparency and the spaces have good views, both to the outside and between the various functions inside. In the offices and the meeting and accommodation spaces, high ceilings contribute to a great sense of spaciousness. The part of the building with these functions also contains a green patio.

connection with terrain

The terrain design is also entirely focused on optimal logistics and a pleasant experience. The offices are surrounded by abundant and extensive greenery. The paved landscaping for the many and sometimes complex logistic movements is located around the taller building segment with the warehouse and the distribution hall. At the very front of the site, there is a car park for staff and guests.

The pedestrian zones and roadways function safely and intuitively. They are organized in a coherent, clearly distinguishable way by the use of different colours and materials. Both the taller and lower building parts have an internal axis that connects the landside directly with the airside of the site. The terrain design takes into account any possible extension of the building in the future.
