Gemeente Buren

The new town hall of the municipality of Buren is conceived as a pavilion in the park. The two storey building stands in Maurik and has a remarkable wooden supporting structure, mostly glass facades and an all-sided canopy with a wide frame. The council chamber is double-height, with skylights in a distinctive diamond pattern. At the heart of the pavilion a work café is situated.

The Municipality of Buren opted for a new city hall because the present building is too large, rather dark and not up to date in terms of installations. cepezed literally contrasted this with a ‘municipal pavilion’. The new building has a small environmental footprint thanks to, among other things, the photovoltaic panels on the roof, demountable construction, and wooden load-bearing structure and floorboards. The existing town hall, a design by Alberts & Van Huut, will be converted into 80 social rental flats afterwards. Furniture from the existing town hall was inventoried as to reuse as much as possible, be it refurbished or not.

canopy

The new town hall has an open and light appearance thanks to the glass facade sections and tall windows on the upper floors. The facades have a horizontal articulation that follows the lines of the landscape. The prominent canopy, with an overhang of two metres seventy, is also completely pavilion-like. It reaches out to the park and softens the transition between inside and outside. The cornice is clad in aluminium, as is the façade between window frames. In a wide horizontal strip on facades, the relief of wooden slats forms a geometric pattern from the coat of arms of Buren.

wood

In the interior, wood is the most common material. It is used for the load-bearing columns, the fixed furniture and the storey floors. The wooden supporting structure is combined with steel connections, which immediately gives the possibility to hang fixtures.

In the roof of the council chamber and the work café next to it, beams form a lozenge pattern with skylights, tapering outwards. This ‘Buren construction’ gives the building individuality. To do justice to the spectacular use of wood, the interior has been designed with restraint.

rivieren

cepezedinterieur designed the reception desk, pantries and a multifunctional furniture for the council chamber. The large oval carpet in the council chamber was also designed by cepezed. The wave-shaped colour areas refer to the municipality's rivers. Two long council tables follow the carpet's curvature. Long benches are integrated on the inside of these tables, intended for guests of wedding ceremonies, for example. The council chamber will have a full-glass facade, with a large image of the Buren coat of arms filtering the view and light. A folding wall connects the council chamber with the work café and allows both spaces to be combined.
