When the Army Museum moved out of Delft, cepezedprojects and Driestar made a winning plan for the listed Armamentarium buildings. ArsenaalDelft is now a hotel, restaurant and conference centre. cepezed made the design and cepezedbouwteam coordinated the implementation.

Connection between old and new

ArsenaalDelft has a striking location on the spot where the Oude Delft and Lange Geer canals meet. The white building dating from 1602 has been redeveloped into a restaurant with a large floating terrace and a congress and conference centre. The second building from 1692 has an exhibition space with a shop on the ground floor; the two floors above now house a hotel.

Next to the 1692 building, there is still a former Dutch East India Company warehouse dating from 1653. We had already redeveloped this into unique office spaces.

Restored to original state

The characteristic appearance of the complex has been maintained; our interventions consist of modular additions to the existing building. These are reversible.

In a number of places, the monument has regained its original state. The bricked-up windows on the courtyards and the closed shutters on, for example, the Korte Geer are once again façade openings. This offers more comfort and possibilities for use and presents a lively picture to the city. The previously closed façade gateways are also ‘open’ again: they have glazed fronts with a slender profile.

Minimal disturbance, maximum effect

The hotel rooms on the upper floors are composed of separate, modular elements. The bathrooms were even made entirely in a factory as ready-made units, and then hoisted and put into place. Using this approach, disturbance to the existing construction is minimal, while the flexibility and forward-looking focus are maximized. The units are easy to remove or relocate. It additionally means that the original construction of wooden beams remains largely visible.
