brand new school with a familiar look

Int 05 van Maerlant Lyceum cepezed Lucasvander Wee

Lucas van der Wee

For the students of the Van Maerlant lyceum in Eindhoven, the school year began in a familiar yet new building. The characteristics of the listed building from 1953 - fine brick details, beautiful works of art - are restored to their full glory while the building also fully responds to 21st century education.

present day requirements
With respect for the existing structure, cepezed reorganized the spaces in such a way that everyone can naturally find their way around. The client’s primary request was to adapt the building to the requirements of the present day. For instance, the original classroom sizes were too small, there were acoustic issues, and improvements were needed in terms of energy management and insulation. In addition to larger classrooms, more individual workspaces were created, as well as areas for collaborative project work.

elegant

The original façades of the Van Maerlant building were partially preserved on the street side, while an entirely new section was added at the rear. The openness of the new sections and the somewhat closed-off old building form an elegant, balanced whole. Another important addition is daylight, which enters through glass facades and skylights. This not only enhances the original architecture but also beautifully showcases the building’s location in the Dommelpark. A new section on this side offers wide views of the park and river. Here, classrooms for creative and technical subjects are situated.

short construction period

After a relatively short construction period of one and a half years, students and teachers now have a building in which they can feel both secure and inspired to learn in an exploratory way. cepezed and cepezedinterieur designed this project for ONS Middelbaar Onderwijs. We collaborated with Bosch Slabbers Landscape Architects, ICS Advisors, Vianen Construction Consultancy, Klictet Installation Consultancy and Management, and Schreven Construction Cost Consultancy. Frans van Hooijdonk designed the lighting plan. We wish the students and teachers much happiness in their new school building.
