concept design for new erasmus mc building complete

ALG westelijkplein view 1

Team aan de Schie

The concept design for the new Erasmus MC building on the 's-Gravendijkwal in Rotterdam is complete. Team aan de Schie, the collaboration between cepezed and Vakwerk Architecten, is designing the complex of almost 120,000 m² on the site of the former Dijkzigt Hospital. The new building brings together the Sophia Children's Hospital, the psychiatric department and laboratory-based scientific research.

masterplan
With the new building, Erasmus MC is working towards a future-proof care environment in which innovation, collaboration and spatial renewal come together. The building forms the first phase of masterplan2050, which Erasmus MC has developed with the City of Rotterdam for a sustainable health-tech campus in the heart of the city. The concept design shows how the complex functions, how it connects to the existing hospital and how it relates to the city. Sustainability and wellbeing have been an integral part of the design from the outset.

Executive Board member Dirk Schraven is delighted to see this milestone reached in the process: 'It is the result of intensive collaboration between the new-build project team, the City of Rotterdam, the users of the new accommodation and the design partners.'

close together
The new building consists of a care building and a research building. The care building brings together the Sophia Children's Hospital and the psychiatric department, with short internal connections and outdoor spaces as part of care and recovery. The Sophia brings all paediatric specialisms together in a single hospital, with space for parents and family to stay close.

supporting recovery
Child and adolescent psychiatry and adult psychiatry also come together under one roof, separated but close to one another, so that care pathways connect. Here too, outdoor spaces are an explicit part of the building: they support diagnosis, treatment and relaxation to create an environment that supports recovery.

meeting and collaboration
The research building is designed to encourage interaction and collaboration between disciplines, with flexible laboratories and workspaces and central spaces for knowledge sharing. This creates a working environment that encourages cross-pollination, brings innovations closer to care and further integrates research and education.

team
For this project, Team aan de Schie works closely with several consultancies: Arcadis for the building services, Aronsohn for the structural engineering and Deerns for building physics. Haskoning advises on sustainability, Peutz on vibration and Lab-Dsign on the laboratory fit-out. Over the coming years the design will be developed further. Completion is scheduled for mid-2033.
