cepezed partner Ronald Schleurholts is a jury member of this year’s architecture competition BNA Best Building of the Year. Last week, the jury jointly visited a wide selection of projects and made a choice for the nominations.

This year's chairman is former politician and European Commissioner Neelie Kroes. The representatives from the field this time are Rob van Kalmthout (director of concepts at Heijmans Vastgoed), Emile Spek (director of Housing and Technology at Amsterdam UMC), and besides Ronald the architects Saartje van der Made and Jolijn Valk.

The jury members first went through all entries individually. Consequently, they made a pre-selection via Zoom sessions. Last week, the jury toured the country, completely corona proof in a large bus. The members visited some twenty projects and were shown around by the users, not by the architects. The search was for the best building, not the best architect.
rich harvest
Ronald and the other judges thought it was a rich harvest this year. Ronald: “From large spectacular buildings to buildings that are spectacular in their precision, clarity and balanced detailing. I noticed that quite a number of buildings were designed in close collaboration between young and established firms, or between an architectural firm and an interior or landscape firm. Sometimes directed this way by clients, other times stemming from the designers' own wishes. ”

Ultimately, the jury nominated ten contenders in the categories private living experience, liveability & social cohesion, stimulating environments and identity & icon value. As a result of the competition, Volkskrant journalist Kirsten Hannema wrote a contemplative article about the current state of affairs in architecture. The winner will be announced on October 22.
