The facade frames of the new Oldelft Ultrasound head office have been installed. Partly because the building is located on the green campus of the Technical University in Delft, cepezed has invested in an ecological, nature-inclusive building for the developer and producer of medical equipment. The facade frames play a central role in this and will soon be completely covered with a mix of climbing plants. The integration of greenery and the circular construction method contribute to Oldelft's BREEAM-Excellent certification.
The frames consist of building-high, steel box frames with a wire mesh that is suitable for both winding and non-winding climbing plants. The racks are perpendicular to the facade and thus also counteract annoying light radiation for users. Each frame has its own foundation.
The vegetation consists of a diversity of specifically selected climbing plants. The choice is based on both the physical and aesthetic qualities of the plants. Think of the sun requirement, water requirement and frost resistance of a species, but also the growth characteristics. The wisteria, for example, is a very fast grower, but becomes increasingly bare at the bottom. The plant is therefore combined with a relatively low-growing climbing plant such as the forest grape, so that the frames are covered at every level.
The plants have also been picked to form an attractive habitat for various birds and insects. The hedera, for example, provides a good habitat for a variety of insects and smaller bird species such as the sparrow. Bees and butterflies particularly like flowering plants such as the climbing hydrangea. The seasons have also been taken into account: in order to prevent the frames from becoming completely bare during the cold months, varieties were chosen that bear leaf during different times of the year.
