Yesterday, Villa in Meijendel won the Dutch Steel Award in the Residential Construction category. Thijs Asselbergs, chairman of the jury, presented the award to architect Jan Pesman. The jury portrays the villa as "meticulously developed and executed" and therefore "the pinnacle of residential construction at a watchmaker's level."
smart steel construction
The villa's steel construction allows for the use of large amounts of glass in the facades, partition walls, and floors. This results in maximum sightlines and an unobstructed view of the surrounding nature. Additionally, the abundance of glass ensures that daylight penetrates deep into the house. The villa's supporting structure is composed of carefully designed prefabricated elements, which are detachable and reusable. In this sense, the villa also serves as a manifesto for circular construction.

The jury considers it a structurally and aesthetically typical cepezed building. "The sleek, sober, almost futuristic 'installation' contrasts with the leafy surroundings. This is the pinnacle of residential construction in steel at a watchmaker's level."
lifetime achievement award
The jury also regards the award for the villa as a lifetime achievement award: "Everything Pesman has invented, designed, built, and so meticulously detailed over the past fifty years comes together here. It is steel, it breathes steel, it feels like steel. Meticulously developed and executed without pretension. Immaculate finish, stylistically. No frills, ingeniously designed, and worthy of the steel award."
