The cepezed designed Moreelse bridge is part of a large exhibition RIDE A BIKE! Reclaim the City, which opens tonight in the Deutsches Architektur Museum (DAM) in Frankfurt.
RIDE A BIKE! Reclaim the City focusses on Cycle infrastructure as part of an integrated urban development concept.The project presents key, exemplary cycling projects in a larger public framework, thus promoting a better understanding between all those who use the infrastructure.
The use of bicycles is examined using an integrated approach, with the various relevant aspects – landscape architecture, transportation planning, the design of public spaces and urban planning being taken together and set out in such a way that both experts and the general public can understand them.
It is time to rethink the shared use of urban space, to manage it sensibly and to continue to develop it in such a way that the quality of life in towns and cities really does improve. The project illustrates the kind of ideas and projects on the subject which go far beyond merely reorganizing traffic flow, thus providing the impetus for meaningfully planning the urban space of the future
The design and realization of the Moreelse Bridge has had a great positive impact on the mobility and connectivity within the city of Utrecht. Where the broad railway yard and station area of Utrecht’s inner city are a physical barrier for pedestrians and cyclists, the bridge enables to conquer these.
The bridge is exclusively designed for pedestrians and cyclists and a real eye-catcher. It spans the rails in two gently curving waves. Despite its length of 312 meters and 10 meters width, the bridge looks refined and almost forms a haven between the two districts.
The trees play an important role in the general concept of the bridge and form an urban continuation of the tree avenues on both sides of the railway area. They are the only vertical elements on the bridge; cepezed has integrated the lighting into the bridge railings in order to offer the users of the bridge a clear view. The wide view is enhanced by the glass balustrade.
The exhibition can be visited from April 21 to September 2 and is accompanied by a diverse additional program including cycling tours through the city and lectures, as well as a catalogue. For more information you can consult the website of DAM.
