first self-sufficient bus station in the netherlands officially in use

Nieuws 2019 03 12 busstation tilburg

As a part of the large-scale revitalization of the Tilburg public transport hub, the first self-sufficient bus station in The Netherlands was officially taken into use yesterday. In the presence of various interested people, alderman Berend de Vries of a.o. Spatial Planning and Circular Economy performed the opening act. Unique about the cepezed-designed infrastructure project is that the new bus station is self-sufficient with regard to its energy needs. This due to the presence of solar panels on the canopy of the spacious platform. These provide enough energy for the canopy lighting, information panels, the heating incorporated in the waiting benches and a multifunctional pavilion with a.o. limited catering services.

The overall design has the shape of an elongated circuit with a green inner zone at its center. The spacious canopy stretches out on all sides and is covered with translucent ETFE. The lighting is integrated behind this, so that the canopy forms one large lighting element in itself. This strongly contributes to a feeling of security. Besides that, the canopy covers the entire platform and even a part of the buses, so passengers can always board and unboard without hindrance of rainfall.

In order to future-proof the bus station, it is already prepared for quick-charging electric buses. The installation technical infrastructure needed for this is already incorporated into the canopy framework. The sleek and robust design also contributes to sustainability. The detailing with a minimum of corners and edges prevents pollution and reduces maintenances costs.

Due to the thorough engineering and drastic prefabrication characteristic of cepezed, the assembly that started at the end 2018 was quick and efficient. The new, state-of-the-art bus station has advanced both the comfort of the travelers and the revitalization of the Tilburg public transport hub with another major step.
