How can circular economy concepts help to tackle the challenges of the building sector? And how can they support the transition to a more sustainable and future proof sector? These questions are explored on the basis of 25 examples in the brochure 'Circular buildings: building a sustainable future', featuring four projects by cepezed.
pioneering circular innovations
According to Holland Circular Hotspot, initiator of the publication, is the Netherlands a country where challenging terrains and very few natural resources are a driving force for pioneering circular innovations. The aim of the 25 best practices is ‘to inspire further development and innovation inside and outside the Netherlands and to create opportunities for forward-thinkers.’ Minister for Foreign Trade and Development Cooperation, accepted the first copy during the trade mission 'Sustainable Infrastructure & Circular Construction' in Belgium.
four cepezed projects
The brochure discusses four projects by cepezed: De Knoop, The Green House, Bouwdeel D and the Temporary Court Amsterdam.
In 2018, the Luitenant Generaal Knoopkazerne in the Utrecht railway station area was drastically renovated. From an introverted 1980s building, this property changed into a light, open and sustainable government office.
For De Knoop, cepezed fully focused on limiting demolition and reusing materials. This succeeded thanks to a shared objective and a flexible design.
remountable buildings
A nice additional building was added during the renovation. The Green House, beautifully finished, is prefabricated, shell is finished, it’s temporary and fully remountable. This means that the building can be dismantled and rebuilt elsewhere. The same applies to Building D(emountable) in Delft. The Temporary Court Amsterdam is also a prime example of remountable construction. It served for five years as temporary accommodation for the Amsterdam judiciary, was completely dismantled last year and will be rebuilt in 2023 in Enschede, where it will serve as a business center with an educational function.
