cepezed wins tender for Labq in Amsterdam

cepezed won the tender for the design of the UvA's innovative LabQ, on the Amsterdam Science Park. The new building will be the central hub where education, research and valorization in the field of quantum physics and technology come together. It will have a floor area of approximately 13,000 m2. Expected completion is mid-2027.
quantum ecosystemLabQ will not only be home to UvA's QuSoft research center (Faculty of Natural Sciences, Mathematics and Computer Science) and the Center for Mathematics & Computer Science. The building will also house advanced laser setups, with the aim of achieving breakthroughs in quantum research. Part of the focus will be on the development of quantum applications and "quantum sensing.

The building will provide space for co-creation and 'field labs,' in which UvA researchers can work closely with each other and external partners. Among other things, this will build a bridge between fundamental quantum research and its practical applications, and UvA's LabQ will become an important link in the national quantum ecosystem of Quantum Delta NL.

cepezed is creating the state-of-the-art multifunctional design for LabQ together with its partners Deerns, Tielemans and 4Building. The building will have a light, wooden construction with functions such as offices, small educational and facility areas, entrance zone and elevators. This construction lies around a solid, concrete core that will house lab spaces and teaching rooms.

In total, the building has seven floors. On the third floor there are two striking elements in the design: an atrium surrounded by offices and a stepped roof garden, or "grandstand garden. The lines of the grandstand stairs are derived from the flowing shapes of quantum devices. The roof garden with the grandstand is partially sheltered from the wind and can accommodate study and work spaces.
paris proofSustainability is paramount at LabQ. The building is being developed according to the Paris Proof all-electric standard, a building and design standard aimed at reducing CO2 emissions. By making use of Heat and Cold Storage (CHS) technology and renewable energy sources, the UvA aims with LabQ to create an energy-neutral building with a low impact on the environment. With the so-called "whole life carbon" approach, the commitment is to keep CO2 emissions low over the entire life of the building.

Another important sustainability objective is to create a degree of flexibility for the future. With new developments and for different user groups, it must be possible to make space in the building at a later time, without immediately using a lot of raw materials and energy to do so.
