body of collection center netherlands completed

Exterieur gevel collectiecentrum nederland cepezed

Lucas van der Wee

The body of the cepezed-designed Collection Center Netherlands (CC NL) has been completed and was delivered today! With 30.000 m2, it is the largest museum depot in The Netherlands. It was built by the VolkerWessels companies G&S Bouw and Visser & Smit Bouw. The coming period will be focused on the realization and finishing of the interior, which cepezedinterieur designed in strong cohesion with the architecture.

four collections under one roof

The CC NL will be the physical memory of The Netherlands and will contain over 675.000 objects from the collections of the Rijksmuseum, the Open Air Museum, the Loo Palace and the Cultural Heritage Agency. The cultural treasures range from paintings and other art objects to historical means of transportation and craftworks such as furniture, jewelry and clothing.

Thus, the new building unites four collections under one roof, replacing the existing depots, which are scattered over various locations. The CC NL facilitates optimal sustainable and efficient collection management and also offers extensive possibilities for collaboration, synergy and the exchange of knowledge. In addition to the depot, the building includes offices and restoration studio’s, among other things.

integral interior

For optimal working conditions in the restoration studios, these are provided with shed roofs allowing daylight to enter from the north side. White surfaces on the interior side of the sheds scatter and diffuse the light, thus rendering it as neutral as possible. In other respects, a lot of attention is paid to optimal neutrality in the studios as well. This in order to tire the eyes of the restorers as little as possible and to enable to let the artifacts ‘speak’ as much as possible. For example, an ironless color of telegrey is being used for the walls, which helps to minimize the accommodation of the restorers’ eyes during work. In the offices zones, the walls will partly be finished in warm but modest metallic colors. The combinations and sequences of these colors refer to the ‘paint ladders’ that originate in color research during restoration work. Soon, all furniture including desks, (office) chairs and (work) cabinets will also be placed.

sustainability and aesthetics

The new depot is compact, highly efficient and super insulated. As a result, it is completely energy neutral and for its use, almost no network energy is needed either. The roof is equipped with some 4.000 m² of solar panels for both building and use-related energy needs. The closed parts of the façades are clad with profiled aluminum with a satin gloss, which gives the sleek and minimalist building an almost abstract appearance. For its sustainability, the depot is certified in the highest achievable BREEAM category, Outstanding.

opening

Starting shortly, the four collections will be moved within a time frame of about a year. The official opening is on December 7th. A wide range of cultural and historical artifacts of the four organizations will find optimal new accommodation in the CC NL!
