Construction Contract for OWL Laan op Zuid

Ondert aannemingsovereenkomst OWL LOZ 1024 12

Levien Willemse

For Rotterdam's Laan op Zuid, cepezed designed a spectacular "double school." On 4 October, the construction contract was signed for the building of this educational facility. Starting 2026, it will be the home to the university institute for Communication, Media and Information Technology, the Creating 010 knowledge centre, and Stedelijk Lyceum Rotterdam.

exciting and busy period
To meet the schedule, construction of the basement box began in May. Over the past few months, the project team, design team, and Heerkens van Bavel Bouw worked closely to ensure the financial feasibility of the construction.
"It was an exciting and busy period," says Marjolein van Loenen (Project Leader for Real Estate & Housing, Rotterdam University of Applied Sciences), "in which optimisations were made to elements such as the façade frames and staircases. The priority was ensuring that the necessary adjustments did not affect the building's ease of use, comfort, or safety."

cityscape
One of the standout features of the design is the interactive ceiling, developed by Studio Rap. IT students will be able to programme this ceiling with light and movement. This gives the building a unique appearance: the ceiling adds an innovative element to the interior and is also visible from the outside.

progress
With the signing of the agreement, the contractor can now start purchasing materials and further construction activities. In the coming period, Rotterdam University of Applied Sciences and the BOOR foundation, which oversees the lyceum, will focus on the furnishing and facilities of their new location. The building's completion is scheduled for May 2026, with the official opening set for September that year.
