Commissioned by the Government Property Corporation, cepezed has designed the expansion of the Customs Port Rotterdam location on the Maasvlakte. For users Tax and Customs Administration and Customs Administration, the expansion of this State Inspection Terminal is aimed at coping with the increasing volume of goods in the port of Rotterdam. After a European tendering procedure, the total engineering assignment was awarded to the integral design team led by cepezed.
worldwide unique practice centre
Two new construction volumes have been added to the location; a Customs Control Warehouse directly attached to the existing building and a separate hall further on the site to house a dog training centre and a globally unique practical training centre. In the latter centre, inspectors, customs staff and escort dogs will have practical situations recreated on a one-to-one basis and equipped with state-of-the-art training techniques.

clear zoning
The hall for practical and dog training has a continuous skylight over its full length and is partially situated behind a surrounding green dike that functions as a sound barrier for the animals. Both the training centre and the DCL have a zoned layout that provides solutions for the complex internal organisation of goods flows, inspection activities and safety requirements for people and animals.

horizontal lines
Both the warehouse and the hall have a steel cladding with horizontal sheet piling in graphite black, which makes them contrast strongly, and at the same time calmly, with the existing grey and green low-rise and high-rise buildings in an otherwise grey environment.
For the façade cladding, cepezed developed a prefab glued corner profile in previous projects in order to create a permanently taut continuous façade appearance; this corner solution has also been applied to the RIT. The Customs Control Pilot is provided with ten loading and unloading docks and ample internal capacity for the performance of inspection work.
