Royal Netherlands Navy
The Defence Helicopter Command (DHC) of the Royal Netherlands Navy is getting a new headquarters. This Squadron Building is located at Maritime Air Base De Kooy in Den Helder. It includes a hangar with four maintenance bays, a wash dock, storage facilities, and office spaces for staff. The outdoor area will also be redesigned. As with other defence buildings, strict security requirements apply, but this has not compromised the design - the building is flooded with daylight, and even in the hangar, wooden elements create a warm atmosphere.

everything under one roof
The Squadron Building will serve the 860 Squadron, responsible for the Navy’s maritime helicopters. Other areas will be used by the 990 Squadron, which handles logistics support and tool distribution. Due to the diverse functions, varying room heights, and technical demands, the architectural design prioritises cohesion. A uniform façade material and a sleek, elongated roofline visually unify the different sections. This horizontal design also complements the open landscape surrounding the base.
sustainable & pleasant
Despite the strict security standards and the significant amount of technical installations, the project has successfully incorporated sustainable choices. The modular load-bearing structure allows for future expansion and is fully demountable. Existing brick paving and sunshades from the current hangar will be reused, and custom-made light fixtures will return in the new crew room. The design focuses on spaciousness and natural light, creating pleasant workspaces. Which in turn is further enhanced by the wide green strip in front of the building and rooftop gardens visible from the offices.

identity & interior design
Throughout the design process, the users were actively involved, contributing to the layout, furnishings, and signage. The positioning of spaces ensures a clear view of the airstrip. For the interior, the rugged character of the 860 Squadron is just as important as the strong sense of camaraderie within the team. On the upper floor, wooden walls, ceilings, frames, and built-in elements create a warm, homely atmosphere. In contrast, the ground floor is highly functional, with a dedicated, prominent display for the squadron’s mission emblems.
