The Horst Complex at the University of Twente is in urgent need of modernisation and sustainability improvements. The spaces within this iconic 1960s building, home to the Faculty of Technical Engineering, no longer align with contemporary research and teaching methods. We propose redistributing functions across the complex, which would, among other benefits, enhance social dynamics.
a machine in the landscape
Based on our spatial and technical analysis, we propose shifting functions, opening up facades with glass, and introducing greater vertical openness. These interventions would enhance usability and encourage more interaction. A tiered approach to liveliness, noise, and tranquillity would be beneficial—for instance, locating educational functions in the low-rise carré and research functions in the high-rise and satellite buildings. By incorporating ‘activity functions’ in the carré, the Horst Complex would better integrate with the vibrant campus environment. The original vision of the campus as a ‘machine in the landscape’ will remain intact but with a contemporary interpretation.

sustainability
As sustainability is a key aspect of this project, we have also analysed the installations and shafts. cepezed sees particular opportunities in an integrated approach, exploring innovative, natural, and energy-efficient climate concepts. A major challenge is the current spatial demand, which exceeds available space. cepezed will address this in close consultation with users: our tender submission included a timeline and step-by-step plan for participation.
