On the site of the former Dijkzigt Hospital in Rotterdam, Team aan de Schie is designing the new building for Erasmus MC. Across almost 120,000 m², the Sophia Children's Hospital, the psychiatric department and laboratory-based scientific research come together. The starting point is to keep everything close together, so that care, research and the people who work there can find one another easily.

two buildings, short distances

The new building consists of a care building and a research building. Stairs and routes link the outpatient clinics and the floors, and connect the two buildings to one another. Across several floors, the new building connects to the existing Erasmus MC, strengthening collaboration and care. Towards the city, the complex opens up with a public square on the 's-Gravendijkwal and a city balcony at the Sophia Children's Hospital. This keeps a building of this size easy to navigate and the distances between functions short.

care close by

In the care building, the Sophia Children's Hospital and the psychiatric department come together. The Sophia brings all paediatric specialisms together in a single hospital, with space for parents and family to stay close. Child and adolescent psychiatry and adult psychiatry sit under one roof, separated but close to one another, so that care pathways connect. In both, outdoor spaces are part of the building: they support diagnosis, treatment and relaxation, and help create an environment that supports recovery.

room for research and interaction

The research building is designed to encourage interaction and collaboration between disciplines. Flexible laboratories and workspaces make the building adaptable, and central spaces invite knowledge sharing. This creates a working environment that encourages cross-pollination, brings innovations closer to care and further integrates research and education.

first phase of masterplan2050

The new building is the first phase of masterplan2050, which Erasmus MC has developed with the City of Rotterdam for a sustainable health-tech campus in the heart of the city, bringing together health, technology and enterprise. Sustainability and wellbeing are part of the design from the outset. The concept design is complete and shows how the complex functions, how it connects to the existing hospital and how it relates to the city. Over the coming years we will develop the design further, towards completion in mid-2033.
