TU Delft Logistics and Environment

TU Delft's Department of Logistics and Environment is situated in a brand new building. The building at the TU Delft Campus Zuid functions as a storage and distribution location for laboratory supplies used at various faculties. For TU Delft, this flexible and circular designis a fine example of sustainability, circularity and nature inclusiveness, one of the universaty's main ambitions.

green and healthy work environment

Many natural materials are used for the new, U-shaped building. There is a surprising amount of daylight in the building, even though the shape seems closed. The high level of transparency makes it a healthy working environment. The use of materials and the spacious layout also contribute to the quality of the place. For a building that has a storage and distribution function, this is certainly not obvious.

A climate-adaptive and nature-inclusive design was created for the integration of the building. The curved roofs are provided with semi-high, native planting. The resulting flora (and subsequently fauna) blend in with the biodiversity of the surrounding polder landscape. The fence is almost invisible trough large corten steel sliding gates and vegetated slopes. The security boundary is incorporated in the building.

sustainability

The building is sustainable on many levels. With the aim of a BREEAM Excellent certification it suits the most up-to-date guidelines, including the minimising of material and energy consumption. For the necessary materials not subject to regulation, the aim is to use at least 80 percent non-virgin or bio-based building materials.

For example, the main roof structure is made of wood and the internal and external walls are made of circular sand-lime blocks. The concrete floor is created with an increased proportion of recycled granulate and the facade is made of corten steel that is maintenance-free and without chemical coating. The building is energy-neutral and not connected to the gas grid. Renewable energy is obtained from solar panels on the roof, which are partly new panels and partly reused panels from the previous L&M building.

optimal use

The requirements of logistics processes have been carefully considered. For example, the courtyard is spacious enough for the turning radius of trucks. The doors and traffic areas are wide and therefore optimally suited for internal transport.

The layout is clear and makes a definite spatial distinction between type of storage, use and accessibility. Due to the large span of the wooden trusses, the building is very flexible in use and logistics processes can easily be changed.
