For a couple with their own graphic design bureau, cepezed designed a special place to live and work on the Rietveld, a small canal in Delft. The building represents a controversial mix of old and new: it combines the complete reconstruction of a monumental 16th-century house with ultramodern new-build.

Layout of the house
The monument and the new-build are spatially linked via a central, open stairwell and a fully transparent connecting zone of toughened glass that also functions as entrance. The ground floor of the combined whole is reserved for working, with the living areas on the first and second floors.

Modern harmony
The monumental part has been rebuilt using the authentic materials, while the new-build is largely executed in steel and glass. Through careful coordination of scale, size, rhythm and detailing, the new-build blends quietly and pleasantly into the otherwise historic cityscape.
