The Institut für Geographie und Geologie and the Seminar- und Medienzentrum (SMZ) of the Universität Greifswald each get a new home. cepezed designs this cluster of two sustainable buildings together with the German firm RDS Partner. The institute and conference centre will sit at the heart of the campus, next to the university library. A pattern of horizontal slats across the façades refers lightly to layers of earth. The uniformity of the slats secures coherence, while leaving room to bundle them more playfully at the more public SMZ.

The SMZ is conceived as an open pavilion. The cluster's main entrance lies on a small square, beneath the overhang of the SMZ. This is a spacious hall that flows into the daylit walkway between the two buildings. The SMZ holds lecture halls and a freely accessible exhibition space, positioned in clear view on the façade. Here, pieces from the institute's extensive collection of historical maps and remarkable stones are on show. Until now this collection sat across several locations; it gains a complete depot in the basement of the SMZ. The pavilion's green roof doubles as a place for measurements and other research.

The institute makes room for offices, small teaching spaces, laboratories and dedicated practical rooms. On the first floor it has a large roof garden that, framed by U-shaped storeys, opens onto the adjacent scientific arboretum. This raised outdoor space works as an intimate spot to pause or to study. On each of the institute's three floors, space around the central stair is reserved for 'communication': a strategic spot where people run into one another easily and, thanks to the inviting layout, happily linger.

sustainable 

The sustainability target for the institute is BNB Silber, ambitious for a building with labs. It is reached partly through planting and PV panels on the roofs, adaptable floor plans, windows that open, and a demountable structure. The functions are positioned with the east-west orientation in mind, to avoid excessive heat and the need for ventilation. The SMZ is built in timber, in keeping with its pavilion character. Where possible, biobased material is used in the institute too.
