Four buildings and one building system can speed up the construction. Yesterday, BAM Bouw en Techniek Integrale Projecten Noord celebrated topping out the new, water-rich police assembly location in Drachten with a joint barbecue. The location is spread out over three islands and designed as a “blue” campus, with exuberant greenery.
three islands
Three islands of the A7-Noord business park on the outskirts of Drachten are being transformed into a water-rich campus for the North Netherlands Police. There were already police buildings here, and due to regional reorganisation, a few more functions and buildings will be added. The new and existing architecture has been carefully embedded in the scenic surroundings, with the view over the water guiding the placement of doors and windows.
landscape
We have succeeded in solving the complex puzzle of security, buildings, parking spaces and logistical flows of the various police services without compromising the landscape. The buildings are not located directly on the water, so that the shore is wide enough for nature development and other ecological purposes. At the same time, this strip functions as a large garden, with walking paths, seating areas and jetties for police employees.
efficient
The architecture is based on a uniform construction kit, using sustainably produced (EAF) steel. The compact and efficient design made it financially possible to design various additions using bio-based materials, such as wood-constructed atriums and meeting rooms, or a green patio. The amount of glass in the façades is also not standardised, but derived from the function.
Due to the unique location on the three islands, cepezed and BoschSlabbers Landscape Architects worked on an integral design. We are doing so together with Deerns, ABT Wassenaar and Multical. The construction is being carried out by BAM Bouw en Techniek Integrale Projecten Noord. Construction began in February this year and will proceed in two phases. The first phase will be completed in May 2026, the second in March 2027.
