cepezed and cepezedinterieur made the design for the renovation of the Tinbergen Building at the Erasmus University in Rotterdam. The building on Woudestein Campus was constructed between 1963 and 1970, and the original design by Cornelis Elffers still exudes the atmosphere of brutalist functionalism. The building houses the Erasmus School of Economics. The structural base of the building consists of an eye-catching three-storey table structure in clean concrete, followed by seventeen identical storeys above. These lower three layers contain the building's public and logistics functions, while the upper layers contain educational and office functions.

In line with changing usage
The renovation is aimed at bringing the building into line with today’s technical and functional requirements. The modernization takes into account future changing use, but also the monumental qualities of the building. This means that the building is stripped of later additions and the interior is given much-needed air and space. A generous void and stairs will connect the different entrance levels. The building will have a spacious, public heart with interesting visual corridors.

Sustainable and vibrant
Sustainability and a healthy indoor climate are two important focal points in the design of the Tinbergen building. The design is BREEAM-Excellent certified.
The hall will have lively functions such as a coffee bar, information point, study areas and a restaurant. Visibility of these functions gives the building a more representative role at campus level as well. cepezedinterieur designed the custom furniture for both the entrance zones and the floors of the high-rise. cepezedinterieur also put together the range of materials and colours as well as the loose furnishings for the entire renovation.

a glass crown
In addition to teaching and office functions, the building will house an extensive conference centre and so-called faculty club. Campus-wide meetings and festivities will be organised here. Currently, these functions are hidden on the 17th floor. In the new situation, they will get the place it deserves in the form of a fully glazed new 19th floor to crown the monument. This will house a restaurant with spectacular views over the Rotterdam skyline.
