Design for two large new bicycle parking facilities on the north and south sides of the train tracks at Tilburg station. The project is an integral part of the total modernization of the Tilburg public transport hub. This comprises a new, self-sufficient bus station, the restoration of the listed monumental station building originally designed by Van der Gaast and its expansion, including an inter-district tunnel and an extra fourth roofed platform. These are all designed by cepezed as well.
Both parking facilities are two stories high, fitted with tapis roulants (conveyer belts) between the two levels and will accommodate together over 7.000 bicycles. The parking facilities will also contain a workshop for small repairs and space for circa 200 OV (public transport) bikes. The parking facilities will have a 24/7 security monitoring and offer travelers free parking for the first 24 hours.
The parking facilities have been carefully integrated into its surroundings, also taking into account the height of the striking and iconic ‘prawn cracker-like roof' of the station, which will remain in full view from all viewpoints. On the north side, a part of the parking facility will be located below and a part will be adjacent to the future fourth train platform. On the city side facing south, a part of the parking facility will be located below and a part will be on top of the monumental postal platform with its special construction of y-shaped concrete columns. In summertime, trees along the Spoorlaan will provide shadow on this south side.
With a high-quality materialization and refined detailing, the parking facilities have already been nicknamed ‘bicycle hotel’. The façade construction will consist out of black steel profiles with integrated water drainage. The skin is made of glass, which will be largely transparent and offer long sight lines, but will be also partly covered with sight-proof foil. The concrete plinth will also function as crash protection. The parking facilities are inviting and lit after dark, contributing to a safe environment.
The bicycle parking facilities will be realized in close collaboration between the municipality, NS (Dutch Railways) and ProRail. Atelier Quadrat designed the urban master plan for the railway zone, including the materialization of the surrounding public space. The lighting plan was developed in cooperation with Atelier LEK. Main contractor Dura Vermeer has already started construction. According to plan the first bicycles can be parked as of summer 2020.
