cepezed has been selected with the Strabag D&B team for the be-MINE PIT design competition in Beringen (Belgium). The project, requested by the Province of Limburg, concerns the design and realization, within a design & build contract, for a new visitor centre and mining experience in part of the buildings on the former mining site.
From the beginning of the last century to the 1990s, intensive mining took place in no fewer than seven locations in the Limburg Kempen. For and with the preservation of these historically valuable places, the mine sites are gradually acquiring new functions. Of the seven mines, the Beringen site has the largest building arsenal with around 100,000 m² of built industrial heritage. Under the name of be-MINE PIT, it is now being transformed as a tourist-recreational project with a mix of urban functions such as living, working and retail as well as an educational goal. In the mining experience, the stories of the miners will soon come to life in the buildings, spaces, images, sound and exhibition of objects.
The second phase of the competition starts in October with five teams. In addition to Strabag (team lead and construction), the Strabag NV team consists of cepezed (architecture), OYO architects (local architect), Tinker Imagineers (scenography and experience design), Arat architects (restoration architect), DELVA Landscape Architects (landscape design) and Tractebel (engineering).
