Last Thursday October 4th, the city of Maastricht granted the permit for the radical renovation of the congress part of MECC in Maastricht, which will start in less than a year. Around the auditoriums of the 30-year-old building, a wide glass shell with catering, meeting rooms and workspaces within it will be installed. Newspaper De Limburger writes: “The glass shell that Delft-based architect agency cepezed has designed, marks a revival.”
The MECC building will transform from a closed box into a local light beacon. The Forumplein in front of the NH hotel will be fitted with a park-like appearance. A special feature of the new shell largely of glass, is that the narrow closed facade strips add to the stability and are finished with LED-illuminated, translucent glass panels. Due to the renovation, the maximum number of conference visitors will grow from 3500 to 5000. The completion is planned before the 2021 edition of the famous Tefaf art fair.
