international student house delft opened

With a loud bang, smoke, confetti and a spiffy animation on local student life, the cepezed-designed International Student House (ISH) in Delft was officially opened on Thursday, October 5. The Delft mayor Marja van Bijsterveldt, Technical University board member and vice president Education & Operations Anke Mulder and chair of the board of student houser DUWO Antoine Fraaij jointly performed the opening act. The festive ceremony in the restaurant of the new ISH took place as a part of the National Student Housing Congress.

With 332 units, the DUWO development offers accommodation to some 350 international students. The ISH is part of the master plan TU Campus North, which also includes the transformation into student apartments of formerly vacant monumental university buildings. Overall, the plan now realized offers lodging for over 900 students. Within the area as a whole, the ISH functions as the central meeting point and city living room for students.

The TU Campus North plan is a close cooperation between the Delft Technical University, DUWO and the municipality. Aside from accommodation capacity, the goals hereof include a stronger relation between the city and the TU campus, a dynamic interaction between students and the stimulation of connections between communities.

In her speech, mayor Van Bijsterveldt pointed out that TU students are of great importance to the local entrepreneurial climate. In doing so, she also referred to the incubator for technical start-ups Yes!Delft Labs on the nearby Delftech Park, which was designed by cepezed as well.

Anke Mulder, who has been involved in student housing at the TU-Delft for over ten years now, stressed that for a long time, the university’s ambitions were restricted by the shortage in student accommodations. According to Mulder, ISH a huge impulse to the overall housing possibilities.

Antoine Fraaij commemorated the close coherence within the project. “ISH does not just offer accommodation,” said Fraaij, “it is also a home away from home for the international students.” Aside from lodging, the ISH offers a diversity of commercial spaces and a range of communal amenities like the big common room along the adjoining square, which was furnished according to a design by cepezedinterieur. With the landscaping of the surrounding grounds almost finished now, the restaurant will also open soon, thus completing the ISH-complex.
