Westraven is awarded as one of the three finalist for the 'Best Tall Building Award Europe 2009 by the Council on Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat, Chicago. The jury statement:
"While much attention has been given to issues of sustainability in tall buildings over the past decade or so, it is fair to say that the vast majority of this attention has been focused on new construction. By far the greater impact on carbon-issues would be made, however, by retrofitting, upgrading, and finding adaptive reuses for our existing building stock. The Westraven project is a very successful example of such a retrofit. A very elegant and innovative project, it creates a strong visual presence, setting a greater precedent on how to bring an outdated, existing building back into the modern world.
In addition to the noble ambitions behind the project, there are several innovative measures at play here, including pioneering facade and environmental strategies. The overall effect is a complete transformation of what was a standard glass box, into a seemingly new, modern, climate-friendly building."
