cacaofabriek nominated for abe bonnema architecture award 2015

The Cacaofabriek (Cocoa Factory) in Helmond designed by cepezed has been nominated for the Abe Bonnema Architecture Award 2015. The jury selected five entries from the more than sixty buildings delivered in the last two years, where the concept of “dialogue” was given shape in an original, stimulating and innovative way.

The jury said about the Cacaofabriek: “An industrial icon on the edge of Helmond’s town centre has been transformed into a cultural hotspot with a large variety of functions. The building was in a poor technical state due to changes in function and a fire, so the choice was made to create interplay of forms with new and existing elements that reflect the original factory. As part of the transformation into a building with many functions, structural and acoustic solutions were looked for that would respect the history of the building, but at the same time give the building a contemporary and autonomous character.”

The announcement of the winner and the presentation of the award will take place on 1 December in the Rijksmuseum. The exhibition of the entries for the Abe Bonnema Architecture Award can be seen from Thursday 3 December 2015 until Sunday 3 January 2016 in the Fries Museum in Leeuwarden.
