king willem-alexander opens resident

Today in The Hague, His Majesty King Willem-Alexander reopened the office complex De Resident, modernized by cepezed, HofmanDujardin and Antea. The building ensemble now provides accommodation for the Ministries of Health, Welfare & Sport and Social Affairs & Employment. Among those present while the King performed the opening ceremony were the Royal Commissioner for the province of South Holland Jaap Smit, mayor of The Hague Jozias van Aartsen, and the ministers from both departments, Edith Schippers and Lodewijk Asscher.

The atrium designed by cepezed takes the form of the most neutral addition possible. The connecting building segment consists of white steel portals and a transparent roof. It provides an entirely individual experience in a longitudinal sight line, but in a corner-spanning sight line allows abundant space for the original architecture. The interior design by HofmanDujardin follows on from the postmodern nature of the existing buildings; a large part of the floor finish is based on greatly enlarged paintings by Dutch masters.
