Job van den Heuvel, recently graduated architect with cepezed, has won the student Steel Award 2013. His final project The Bold Line, Defining urban void by building a condition, which he conceived in cooperation with fellow student Ignas Kalinaukas, pleased the jury so much that the young architects received the first prize and the accompanying certificate and cash prize on Thursday October 10th. The project is also published in the October issue of the trade journal Bouwen met Staal, which initiated the competition.
The bold line concerns the transformation of linked residual urban spaces in Rotterdam into an animated zone whith multiple programming possibilities, thus bringing new life to the area. In order to realize this, Van den Heuvel and Kalinaukas among other things designed an elongated, transparent pergola with a stability structure of steel portals.
The jury especially valued the nerve of the project, as well as the intelligent research and the keen analysis that underpin the plan. The committee concluded that The bold line is 'brilliant'.
The project is also still a contender in the Archiprix 2013 competition, which decorates the best graduation projects from all architecture schools in the Netherlands.
