cepezed designs temporary replacement 't speelhuis in helmond

cepezed designed a temporary replacement for the burned-down theatre ‘t Speelhuis inHelmond. When the renowned cube theatre designed by Piet Blom goes up in flames in December 2011, it is unsure for a while whether the municipality will rebuild the stage or will choose for new construction at another location. Late May 2012, the city council opts for a temporary facility in the Onze Lieve Vrouwe Tenhemelopneming, a large catholic church building which is about to pass into disuse.

Because the provision is temporary, the church building remains the property of the diocese ‘s Hertogenbosch and the interior of the building is characterized by unique decorations, the reuse is aimed at a minimum of damage and adaption. A second accent of the project is the very tight time schedule of the overall design and realization process: after the decision of the city council late May and commencement of the design at the beginning of July, the new theatre, which is provided with 450 seats just like ‘t Speelhuis, will open its doors for the annual new year’s concert early 2013. At the moment, the theatre is under construction.
